What’s really ridiculous about it is that English itself used to be regarded as an “inferior” language, too unsophisticated and linguistically impure for anyone of wealth or stature to use as their main tongue. That’s why all of our military jargon is French. That was the language of choice for our elite, back in the Norman era.
So, the irony of a bunch of white people speaking what is arguably a peasant’s creole having the audacity to look down on other people for their language is not lost on me.
AAVE is just as structurally complex as any other dialect. And the really funny part is that, in many ways, AAVE has really stayed truer to historical English than SAE. When was the last time you heard a white person use “nary”? AAVE speakers still do in some places. A cool and all-but-forgotten word outside of them, at least in the US.
