one thing that really stood out to me about attack on titan was the female characters. they were actually capable and normal human beings instead of, like, “anime girls”.
none of the girls were ever complimented like “youre pretty strong for a girl” and there was never a point where the commanders were like “can we really send her on a mission? shes a girl and shes emotionally unstable” or where a dude was like “i wouldnt feel good hitting a girl”. plus there were a noticeable gender diversity among the soldiers.
the big thing was that at 0 points in the entire first season, which is as far as ive seen, were any of them sexualized. not once. no blushy embarrassed “wh-wh-what are you talking about!!! b-b-baka!!!” faces. no cleavage-revealing uniforms. not even an archetypal sexy character. nothin.
it was really incredibly refreshing.
