Three Names, One Place

The Sioux name for the Little Bighorn River, in English, is “the Greasy Grass.” The Battle of Little Bighorn happened, therefore, at “greasy grass.”

Contemporary participants in the battle had a third name for it. They called it the “Valley of Chieftains.”
