Me, an nb: Cis people can use any pronouns they want for any reason! Men using she/her and women using he/him, as well as both using neopronouns or gender neutral pronouns, are awesome and it’s totally okay!

Some asshole: Actually, sweetie, that’s transphobic and nbphobic. Cis people who use other pronouns are nasty and cringey.

Me: … So anyway, as I was saying, cis people can use any pronouns they want for any reason! Men using she/her and women using he/him, as well as both using neopronouns or gender neutral pronouns, are awesome and it’s totally okay! Get a fucking life and stop policing pronouns! Let people live!

Normalize! Trying! Out! Different! Pronouns!

but if you’re cis, why would you want to try out different pronouns? I don’t understand that. Pronouns do have gender. He/him is masculine, she/her is feminine, and you can use “they” for neutral. Why not just stick to the pronouns of the gender you identify with?

Pronouns do NOT have a gender. “Masculine” is not a gender.

Masculine of gnc cis people might prefer he/him pronouns, even if they’re women. Consider lesbians who feel disconnected to traditional womanhood, for example.

Feminine and gnc cis people might prefer she/her. It’s not that uncommon with gay men, for example, who feel very feminine.

It’s like how some nonbinary people use he or she. Sometimes pronouns just feel right.

And for some cis people, maybe it’s more like no pronouns feel wrong than it is that particular sets feel right. And that’s also valid!

I misspoke earlier; you’re right, “masculine” is not a gender, but male is. He/him=male, she/her=female. Even if you’re the most masculine looking cis girl ever who likes looking masculine but also likes being a girl, you can still use she/her because you don’t identify as a male.

Yes, you can. But my point is you can also use whatever pronouns you want, even it they aren’t what people would typically expect. And many cis people do, for many reasons.

Anyone, masculine or feminine, male or female, trans or cis, whoever, can use she/her or he/his or they/them or anything else they want. There isn’t a rule that says they can’t. Pronouns are supposed to be about how you feel, how you want to be identified, how you like people talking about you. They shouldn’t need the approval of anyone else. You know what I mean?

He/him lesbians are very common. If you want to understand why cis people might use different pronouns, he/him lesbians could be a good place to start. Find out why lesbians are drawn to those pronouns and it might help you understand what I’m saying here.

“But if they’re cis, why would they want to use different pronouns?”

A: They are not actually cis but haven’t figured that out yet and exploring pronouns may help them realize they are trans.

B: They are cis but gender nonconforming and using alternative pronouns is just a part of their expression of gender nonconformation. Example: A cis woman who dresses masculine, goes by a masculine name, and uses he/him pronouns but still considers himself a woman or a cis man who dresses femininely, goes by a feminine name, and uses she/her pronouns but still considers herself a man.

Cis people using pronouns that are outside of the set that match their birth assigned gender helps normalize the practice and makes things easier for trans and nonbinary people in society.

Gay men who dress in drag use she/her pronouns while in drag all the time. And there’s plenty of very butch lesbians who prefer he/him pronouns.

People should be allowed to use whatever pronouns make them comfortable. There’s nothing wrong with being gnc, whether you’re cis or trans.

Yes, Kevin, I brought my Game Boy to school. Did it bring you joy when you told the teacher? Did it satisfy your bloodlust when she confiscated it from me? You are no paragon of virtue. You are a beast. A vile monstrosity who feeds on suffering. The laws of man may celebrate your deeds, but higher powers may say otherwise.

i mean yea of course you should report actual harmful behavior but if you told mrs henderson that some kid brought his yugioh cards to school cause you wanna be the teacher’s pet, then you’re just a cop

You kiddos have no idea how groundbreaking this was. Like there’s a reason THE lesbian website for a billion years was called After Ellen. She changed everything.

oh man you know that feeling that’s like kind of an ache right between your heart and your stomach? like nostalgic knowing of pain? that’s how the scared look in Ellen’s eyes makes me feel.

Look at her hand too and how nervous she is. Every gay and lesbian person knows this feeling, because we know there are assumptions and consequences and there’s no telling how someone will react.

And let no one forget that she suffered consequences for this. It wasn’t just a moment of cathartic unburdening and then business as usual.

Right, she lost her first TV show. She worked hard to get up to where she is today.

Ellen lost her TV show and didn’t get offered another job for the next 3 years. All while facing harsh critic from most of the world. Not to mention that Oprah, who immediately said yes to playing her therapist in this episode, got her own fair share of disrespectful and mostly racist comments. All over this one episode on a sitcom. Correct me if I’m wrong but I believe that over 40 million people watched this episode to see the first openly gay character on television.

This is history and it better fucking be in the history books for next generations.
