working in an office after working retail/customer service for so many years is such a fucked up culture shock. like…..what do you mean i get paid not to be here on holidays? since when do i have a 401k to contribute to? what is a “raise”? is that like, state mandated? are they forcing you to give me more money?

i mean baby boomers say millennials are entitled but honestly i’m so easily impressed by even the most basic demonstration of respect from an employer at this point. like the other day i told my mom “did you know i have dental insurance now??? isn’t that wild???” and she was like “….shouldn’t you though? you work full time. you should probably have dental. it would be weird if you didn’t?”

i’m really just that used to blatant violations of my employee rights tbh.

I’m going through the same thing rn and my first day they asked me if i liked my chair bc they had some spare ones in the supply closet and I was like. Over the moon just to have a chair and be allowed to not be on my feet and exacerbating my joints all day. I still catch myself asking for permission to use the bathroom.

This is too real, when I got my clinic job I was so excited to get paid holidays and benefits and my coworkers just looked astounded by my level of joy. And paid sick and vacation days?!?!

I’ve moved from retail to a helpdesk at a university. I work far fewer hours and get paid more. I did almost nothing in my first week and was astounded that I still got paid to be there.

They have EXTRA STAFF on AT ALL TIMES! They literally could have two people right now and it would be fine as there’s not much to do, but their staff are salaried and they don’t send us home or make us take holiday when it’s not busy???? They have four full-time and two part-time staff (we work opposite ends of the week) so there are usually five people there, plus the boss. Five! And I can have a drink with me even if I’m on the front! And I can go to the toilet if I need to even if I’m on the front! I don’t even have to ask, I can just go!!!

They’re closed on bank holidays but almost all our bank holidays are on a Monday, so I don’t benefit from them. I just assumed them’s the brakes, but they told me I get half a day off in lieu! And sometimes they’re closed the day after the bank holiday as well, so I get a full day off in lieu! I don’t even have to use it that week, I can save it up and use it for something else without using up my holiday entitlement.

Being treated like both an adult and a human being is difficult to get used to
